Diamox ITO – EMI / RFI Shielding

Introduction

Diamox ITO coatings offer an advanced solution for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) shielding in demanding applications. By combining high transparency with strong electrical conductivity, Diamox ITO lets you protect sensitive electronics without compromising optical performance.

What Is Diamox ITO?

  • ITO stands for Indium Tin Oxide, a transparent conductive oxide widely used where optical clarity and electrical conduction are both required.
  • Diamox ITO Coatings are ultra-thin conductive layers deposited on glass or plastic substrates.
  • Diamox ITO Coating provides an optically clear continuous conductive coating capable of blocking or attenuating electromagnetic and radio frequencies.

Key Benefits for Shielding

High Shielding Effectiveness Achieves strong attenuation of EMI/RFI across a broad frequency range when properly applied and terminated.
Optical Clarity Maintained Excellent visible light transmission (>85-90%) even with conductive coating; keeps display, window, or sensor visibility high.
Versatile Substrates Can be applied to glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, and other optical plastics. Surface finish and substrate choice can further optimise performance both mechanically and optically.
Customizable Sheet Resistance Options for different sheet resistances to meet conductivity vs transparency trade-offs (lower resistance → better shielding, slightly lower transmission). Diamox ITO Coatings are available from 2.5 Ohms Sq up to 500 Ohms/sq.
Termination / Edge Connection Options Can include conductive bus bars, copper/silver contacts, or conductive gaskets to enable proper grounding/connection to enclosure.

Typical Performance

  • Shielding Effectiveness: Depending on the application, Diamox ITO coatings can deliver performance of tens of dB across MHz to GHz ranges (e.g. ≥ 50-60 dB at lower MHz, lower but significant attenuation at high hundreds of MHz to GHz).
  • Optical Transmission: In the visible spectrum (~550 nm), Index matched Diamox ITO Coatings with ~20 ohm/sq sheet resistance can transmit ~85-92 % depending on substrate and finish.
  • Size & Coating Options: Available on large panels; coatings can be tailored in sheet resistance, substrate material, thickness, and finish to suit application needs.

Applications

Diamox ITO is suited for any scenario where you need both visibility/optical clarity and EMI/RFI protection. Examples include:

  • Display windows, instrument panels, and touchscreens
  • Medical equipment and imaging windows
  • Avionics, aerospace and military systems
  • Telecommunications, radio equipment
  • Automotive sensor and HUD (Head-Up Display) windows
  • Industrial and scientific measurement and optics systems

Design Considerations & Best Practices

  • Substrate Material & Finish: Choice between glass and optical plastics (polycarbonate, acrylic) depends on weight, impact resistance, optical distortion, temperature, etc. Finish (hard coating, anti-glare, etc.) affects both transmission and durability.
  • Sheet Resistance / Conductivity vs Transparency Trade-off: Lower sheet resistance improves shielding but usually reduces visible transmission or increases reflection; choose a value appropriate for your system’s sensitivity.
  • Terminations / Grounding: Proper terminations (bus bars, conductive tapes, gaskets) are essential to achieve maximum shielding performance; ensure reliable contact to enclosure.
  • Environmental / Durability Factors: Consider UV exposure, humidity, temperature cycling, mechanical abrasion; coatings and substrates should be chosen accordingly.
  • Compliance & Testing: Measure shielding effectiveness to relevant standards (e.g. MIL-STD or other industry specific EMI/RFI test protocols) to verify performance in your specific configuration and frequency range.
