Indium Tin Oxide Coated Glass

Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is a fantastic substance that has two characteristics that make it ideal for a number of applications: Firstly, it is optically clear, and secondly it is electrically conductive. These two features combined make for a very useful addition to glass – When ITO is deposited onto glass, the glass remains clear and becomes conductive.

ITO can also be deposited onto plastics and PET films, but let’s focus on the uses of Indium Tin Oxide coated glass.

Indium Tin Oxide Coated Glass Applications

In short, these are numerous and span many different industries, including medical and military, research and development, automobile and aviation, and technology. One of the most prominent uses for ITO glass is in the production of touchscreens. Indium Tin Oxide is one of the most common transparent conductive oxides available and is used in the majority of cell phone touchscreens.

Depositing a thin layer of Indium Tin Oxide onto the glass screen of a cell phone provides a level of conductivity that allows the device to register a touch and more complicated commands. This is due to a change in charge on screen when touched. The device can register the exact location and gesture and act accordingly.

It’s not just cell phones though – ITO coated glass is used in many other touchscreen devices within the automobile, aviation and medical and military industries.

Staying with the aviation and military, Indium Tin Oxide coated glass is used in cockpits, assisting in clearer vision in demanding environments. This is achieved by passing a current over a glass window, providing a level of heat which demists and de-ices the window. This same technology is now being used more commonly in luxury cars too.

Other Uses Of Indium Tin Oxide Coated Glass

ITO coated glass is also used in the production of OLED screens, cinema projection glass and smart freezer doors (as seen in supermarkets). The medical and R&D industries also use ITO coated glass display equipment.

Smart windows now utilise ITO coated glass offering varying levels of opacity on command. Obviously, there is an aesthetic quality here, but the importance to the environment is also worth mentioning too. By either encouraging or discouraging the sun’s heat to enter a building, there is a reduction in either heating or air conditioning requirements, which will also reduce power consumption.

The use of Indium Tin Oxide coated glass slides and ITO coated coverslips has changed everything for electron microscopy. The glass carries the charge, rather than the specimen, resulting in the same clarity yet enhancing the specimen’s lifespan under scrutiny. Diamond coatings offer both ITO coated glass slides and coverslips to purchase directly from our website.
