What is Indium Tin Oxide Glass?

It’s very likely you use it in some form every day. So what is Indium Tin Oxide glass? Read on to find out!

What is Indium Tin Oxide Glass

Indium Tin Oxide glass is used in a variety of applications that you may not be aware of, but it’s very likely you use it in some form every day. So what is Indium Tin Oxide glass? Read on to find out!

Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is a clear substance that is also electrically conductive. It can be added as a thin film to substrates including plastics, acrylic and glass. Indium Tin oxide glass remains totally clear and also provides an electrical charge across its surface.

Why would you need ‘conductive glass’? It would be fair to say it would be near impossible to live without Indium Tin Oxide glass – your cellphone screen most likely uses ITO glass to perform the touch gestures required to deliver commands. Indium Tin Oxide glass is used in the majority of touchscreens for phones and tablets and touch enabled laptops too.

Applications of ITO glass include LCD / plasma displays, field emission displays, photovoltaics, aircraft windows, energy conserving windows and Electrochromic and electroluminescent displays.

Conductive transparent indium tin oxide coatings may also be applied to shield electromagnetic fields. ITO coatings are effective in the production of EM protection windows that shield electromagnetic radio waves but allow visible light transmission.

ITO heaters generate the necessary heat to extend the operating temperatures of LCDs (liquid crystal displays) within cold environments. The coating also serves to anti-fog, anti-ice and de-ice optics/optical displays.

Diamond Coatings are based in Phoenix, Arizona and offer a range of premium-quality ITO and Index Matched ITO coatings.

We offer a range of ITO coating options including our Custom Diamox ITO and Diamox+ Index-Matched ITO.

Custom Diamox ITO is applied to glass or plastic (polyester, acrylic or polycarbonate) substrates via low-temperature vacuum deposition at our own manufacturing plant.

Diamox+ Index-Matched ITO combines layers of metal oxides and quartz, the multi-layer coating offers all properties of Diamox ITO while offering index-matched coatings. The thickness of the quartz used in production is carefully monitored to ensure optimum transmission and reduce reflection.

This coating is far superior to a standard ITO coating, with better peak light transmissions (92/82 per cent respectively for 20ohms / sq coatings on one side of glass / polycarbonate substrates and wavelengths between 525 and 600 nm) and can be applied to plastic / glass substrates up to a coating capacity of 4m/sq.
